At Our Lady of the Rosary Primary School, we use the Jigsaw PSHE scheme, a comprehensive and progressive programme that has been written in line with the latest national policy, guidance and legislation relating to Personal, Social, Health and Economic (PSHE) Education.

The scheme is fully mapped against the PSHE Association Programme of Study and supports the aims of the National Curriculum. Every lesson is designed to promote pupils' spiritual, moral, social and cultural (SMSC) development and provides meaningful opportunities for children to reflect, discuss and grow as individuals.

Jigsaw contributes to a broad and balanced curriculum and supports the responsibilities outlined in the Education Act (2002 and 2006), the Children Act (2004) and the Academies Act (2010). Through its carefully structured content, the programme promotes pupil wellbeing, safeguarding, personal development and community cohesion.

Through Jigsaw PSHE, children develop the knowledge, skills, attitudes and values that enable them to:

All classes at Our Lady of the Rosary follow the Jigsaw PSHE programme, and each class has its own Jigsaw character to support and engage children throughout their learning journey.

Jigsaw is organised into six termly "Puzzles" (units of work), with the entire school exploring the same theme at the same time. The Puzzles are carefully sequenced, ensuring learning builds progressively throughout the year.

Term 1: Being Me in My World

This unit helps children develop a sense of belonging within their class, school and wider community. Pupils explore their rights and responsibilities, learn about working and socialising with others, and understand how their voice can positively influence the world around them.

Term 2: Celebrating Difference

Children learn to recognise and celebrate similarities and differences between people. The unit explores diversity, inclusion and respect, covering themes such as disability, racism, friendships, conflict and the importance of treating everyone with kindness and understanding.

Term 3: Dreams and Goals

This Puzzle encourages children to think about their hopes and aspirations for the future. They learn about setting goals, recognising their strengths, overcoming challenges and developing resilience. Through teamwork and collaborative activities, children explore feelings such as pride, ambition, disappointment and success, while also learning about the dreams and goals of people from different cultures and countries.

Term 4: Healthy Me

This unit focuses on both emotional and physical wellbeing. Children learn about topics including mental health, friendships, body image, managing stress, relaxation and staying safe. They also explore healthy lifestyles through balanced diets, physical activity, personal hygiene, rest, first aid, and age-appropriate learning about the risks associated with drugs and alcohol.

Term 5: Relationships

The Relationships Puzzle explores a wide range of important topics including families, friendships, pets and animals, and experiences of love and loss. A key aspect of this unit is safeguarding and helping children understand how to keep themselves safe, both online and offline. Children learn about cyber safety, managing conflict, developing self-esteem, recognising their strengths, understanding family roles and responsibilities, and challenging stereotypes. All learning is delivered in an age-appropriate and sensitive manner to ensure it meets the needs of every child.

Term 6: Changing Me

This unit helps children understand and celebrate change as a natural part of life. They learn about growing up, transition, self-awareness and personal development. Children are supported to understand changes that occur as they mature, developing confidence, resilience and a positive attitude towards change. All learning is carefully planned and delivered in an age-appropriate way that reflects the needs and maturity of the children.
